Hello Everyone! Please join us for our February Program!

“The Challenge of Seeing,” featuring Kathy Gergo, will be an exciting members-only VAA opportunity to see Kathy evaluate and offer suggestions on current works by selected local artists. Each artist featured will bring two works, one successful and one with challenges, to be evaluated by Kathy in her studio while everyone attending has the chance to learn.

Kathy brings great experience and knowledge to this program. A native of Hungary whose art studies at the University of Budapest were interrupted by the 1956 revolution, Kathy arrived in the United States and enrolled at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1961. She moved to New Orleans and supplemented her studies by taking courses at Tulane and workshops with some of the country’s finest watercolor teachers. Since becoming a professional artist in 1974, Kathy has taught watercolor, given workshops, lectured, and served as juror for numerous art organizations. In 1986 she became a faculty member of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art.

Kathy moved to Vicksburg in the wake of Katrina and now makes it her home. She has graciously offered her hospitality and talent in helping other artists as the program for the Vicksburg Art Association on February 7 in her studio, beginning at 7 pm. If anyone is interested in being one of the featured artists, please contact Linda Hall at 601-994-4618 or pigoleta@yahoo.com. Timing and seating have limited the number receiving this evaluation to twelve, so please respond quickly. And, of course, every member is welcome to come and participate by observing only.

Please join us for “The Challenge of Seeing” at seven on February seventh!

Travel Journal Workshop
November 9, 2011
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery

Want to make your next trip last forever in your memory? Travel journaling has been shown to imprint memories of your vacations and journeys in your mind’s eye. Beth Dean, an impressionist painter currently residing on a like in Madison County, is coming to teach this journaling technique during a one-hour, lunch-included, workshop on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery in Vicksburg. You do not need to be an artist or even know how to sketch to learn this technique!

Beth began painting as a child, studied under many local artists, and was classically trained in her early fine arts education. After college she maintained a highly successful design career for over twenty years. Having vowed to “go back to painting” professionally, Beth has committed herself to that desire. Her impressionistic paintings in oil on masonite and canvas are done both in her studio and en plein air. She regularly attends workshops, studying under nationally recognized artists to expand her education. Beth also conducts oil painting classes, plein air workshops, and journaling workshops.

Beth experiences art in everyday, fleeting moments. It is this experience that she will share during this workshop in November at the Firehouse Gallery (outside on the patio if weather permits). Beth will describe, demonstrate, and provide examples of her work in travel journals. Then you will get the chance to produce the first page in your own journal while enjoying a light lunch on site.

The cost of the workshop, sponsored by the Vicksburg Art Association, is $50 for VAA members and $55 for non-members. This price includes all supplies – journal, sketch pen, watercolor set, and lunch. You may sign up by sending a check payable to the Vicksburg Art Association, to P. O. Box 1251, Vicksburg, MS, 39180, indicating payment is for the Travel Journal Workshop. There is a class limit of twelve (12), so don’t wait too late. Deadline for registration is Saturday, October 29, 2011.

You may read more about Beth and see some of her work at www.bgdean.fineartstudioonline.com. Selected painting will also be on display on the day of the workshop at the Firehouse Gallery.

Description

The VAA offers art-related programs and/or speakers. Throughout the year workshops in varied art disciplines are held. Competitive exhibtions of work by regional artists are hosted. Most of these events are held at the Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery located at the corner of Main and Openwood Streets

About the Firehouse

The VAA is fortunate to have as its headquarters one of Vicksburg's first firehouses. This building has been designated as a Mississippi Landmark by the Department of Archives and History. The Old Constitution Firehouse is believed by the Archives and History Department to be the most intact Victorian fire station in the state.

It was built in 1870 as the second house for the city's first volunteer fire company and later housed the first paid company.

The building retains the central stall, barracks room, cupola, and bell which was used to call the volunteers.

The presence of the fire station made the Openwood - Main Street area one of the most desirable residential districts in Vicksburg before 1876.
