Travel Journal Workshop

Want to make your next trip last forever in your memory? Travel journaling has been shown to imprint memories of your vacations and journeys in your mind’s eye. Beth Dean, an impressionist painter currently residing on a like in Madison County, is coming to teach this journaling technique during a one-hour, lunch-included, workshop on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery in Vicksburg. You do not need to be an artist or even know how to sketch to learn this technique!

Beth began painting as a child, studied under many local artists, and was classically trained in her early fine arts education. After college she maintained a highly successful design career for over twenty years. Having vowed to “go back to painting” professionally, Beth has committed herself to that desire. Her impressionistic paintings in oil on masonite and canvas are done both in her studio and en plein air. She regularly attends workshops, studying under nationally recognized artists to expand her education. Beth also conducts oil painting classes, plein air workshops, and journaling workshops.

Beth experiences art in everyday, fleeting moments. It is this experience that she will share during this workshop in November at the Firehouse Gallery (outside on the patio if weather permits). Beth will describe, demonstrate, and provide examples of her work in travel journals. Then you will get the chance to produce the first page in your own journal while enjoying a light lunch on site.

The cost of the workshop, sponsored by the Vicksburg Art Association, is $50 for VAA members and $55 for non-members. This price includes all supplies – journal, sketch pen, watercolor set, and lunch. You may sign up by sending a check payable to the Vicksburg Art Association, to P. O. Box 1251, Vicksburg, MS, 39180, indicating payment is for the Travel Journal Workshop. There is a class limit of twelve (12), so don’t wait too late. Deadline for registration is Saturday, October 29, 2011.

Expotential 2010: The Art of LIFE will be an art show highlighting the works of local artists who have disabilities. The MS Crafts Center, a LIFE partner, is providing the venue for the show to be held Thursday April 8 from 5 - 8 pm.

Paintings by William Heard, Roz Roy,Claire Myers and others; glass work by Jerry Hymel; pottery by Sheri Marshall; folk art by Earl Simmons and more will be highlighted.

Acrylic Workshop January 30 & 31 with Ellen Langford

Take advantage of the opportunity to work with acrylic by attending the VAA Workshop presented by Mississippi native Ellen Langford. The workshop can be enjoyed by both beginner and experienced artists. In addition to helping participants become comfortable with acrylic as a medium, she will be teaching techniques in layering, glazing, and building with negative shading and negative space.

The workshop will be held Saturday, January 30th from 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 31st from 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Old Constitution Firehouse. The cost for the 2 day workshop is $85.00. Participants wishing to attend Saturday only will incur a cost of $60.00. Supplies for the workshop are not included in workshop price. The Vicksburg Art Association is hosting its Twenty-ninth Annual Mississippi Exhibition October 24 - 28, 2009.
All artists at least 18 years old who are VAA members or residents of Mississippi are invited to participate.

Competitive Awards
Best-in-Show will be awarded $500. Ribbons will be awarded to 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and Honorable Mentions in each category according to the discretion of the judge.

Purchase Awards:
Purchase awards are being pledged by individuals, businesses and organizations in the community.

Rules of Entry
1. Entry fees are $15.00 for current members. Those who want to join or renew their membership may pay the $15.00 entry fee if they also pay the $15.00 membership fee.
2. Each artist may enter a total of three (3) pieces in the following categories:
Oil • Watercolor • Print • Three-Dimensional • Photograph-Monochrome
Acrylic • Drawing • Fiber • Mixed-Media • Photograph-Color
3. Flat work must not exceed 48 inches by 48 inches, including the frame, and 75 pounds. All work must be framed, with no exposed glass or raw edges, and ready for hanging (with picture wire only - no sawtooth hangers.) An entry label should be attached to the back of each piece in the lower right corner.
4. Three-dimensional work must not exceed 48 inches by 48 inches and 100 pounds. An entry label should be attached to each piece in an appropriate spot.
5. All work must be original to the entering artist, not more than 2 years old, and not have been shown in a previous VAA competitive show. Copies of other works will not be accepted, nor will anything made from commercial kits, molds, or designs.
6. All work must be for sale. A 15% commission will be retained by the VAA on all sales, including the Purchase Awards. Payment will be made to the VAA, which will issue payment to the artist.
7. All work must be hand delivered to the Constitution Firehouse Gallery, Main and Openwood Streets,
according to the schedule. No work will be released prior to the official closing of the show.
8. All precautions will be exercised in the handling of art submitted to the show. However, the VAA assumes no responsibility for any work beyond that of normal good care and will not be responsible for work that is not picked up during the scheduled times. Work left beyond final pickup day will be subject to a $1 per day fee.
9. The VAA reserves the right to photograph work for publicity purposes, to refuse any entry and to reassign categories.

Tuesday, September 9 the VAA will open its new season with an exhibit of new work by 8 members called: "8 Artists Present Funky Vicksburg."

Also a selection of work done in the Summer Firehouse Studio will be exhibited.

Tuesday is Vicksburg Art Association’s “Firehouse Summer Studio” Day for Artists

The VAA offers Firehouse space to adult artists who would like to work independently, but in a group, one day a week. Beginning May 20, 2008, artists can paint at the Firehouse Summer Studio every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A fee of $15 for the term will offset utilities to the VAA. February Meeting Plans Announced

What: Fine and Decorative Art Appraisal

The February 2008 meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12 at 7:30 pm in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.
Maureen A. Donnelly of Jackson, an Accredited Member of the International Society of Appraisers, is a Fine Art Appraiser and Consultant. She will host our February program giving insight to decorative and fine art preservation and appraisal. Ms. Donnelly has an extensive background in appraisal of antiques and residential contents. Her specialties are fine and decorative art including paintings, prints, ceramics, and silver, with particular interest in American Art Pottery, American and European silver and ceramics, 20th century American prints, Louisiana and Mississippi art, and southern "Outsider" art.

Topics the VAA audience will find interesting include descriptions of what is an appraisal, what is "value", what is the market place. She will cover when an appraisal is needed and the different kinds of appraisals, and how to choose and work with an appraiser. Some discussion of IRS matters will include non-cash charitable donations with handout materials on IRS definitions and appraisal organizations.

Vicksburg Art Association meets monthly and offers a Spring Membership Exhibition, a Fall Statewide Exhibition, a Youth Exhibition, and periodic workshops. The annual Christmas Party is a benefit for the maintenance of the Old Constitution Firehouse.

Exploratory Painting Workshop Coming

The Vicksburg Art Association will offer a hands-on exploratory painting workshop February 9th and 10th from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Firehouse Gallery.

Class will break for lunch and participants are encouraged to bring their own sack lunch and drinks.

The instructor, M. Douglas Walton, graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BA degree in Architecture and received the silver metal for general excellence in architecture. He teaches water media encounters classes through continuing education at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA and journey encounters around the world.

Various ways will be demonstrated and taught to solve problems, explore and expand ones creative process to do work that is original and imaginative. The workshop will expose one to the beauty of creativity through lecture, demonstrations, critiques and individual instruction.

The classes are open to the public and painting experience is not required. Class fees are $70.00 for members of the Vicksburg Art Association and $75.00 for non-members. The Vicksburg Art Association will present a program on "Poor Julia" Yard Art with Julia Allen on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at 7:30pm in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse - corner of Main and Openwood - in downtown Vicksburg. The program is free and open to the public.

Metal, having served its initial purpose, is lovingly transformed into a flower, a yard dog or cat, a birdhouse, an angel, a yard child or bandplayer. "Poor Julia" invites us to celebrate life, each day unfiltered, the good and the bad. From nurse to artist, her work expresses that all of life can have meaning, even the pain and suffering we endure, and that beauty and expression can be found in the dirt of the scrap yard. Scratches, imperfections, a pronounced twist, attest that we are all participants in life, not just observers, in today's world of technology and perfection. "Poor Julia" reminds us to nourish our spiritual lives, slow down, and appreciate the small things in life and love our family and friends.

Julia is an exhibiting member of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi and has a studio and gallery in Jackson, Mississippi. Her work is also displayed at the Attic Gallery in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Frondren Traders in Jackson, Mississippi and Eileen West Gallery in Seaside, Florida.

The Vicksburg Art Association is holding the Annual Fall Show Saturday Oct 27th through Wednesday, Oct 31st, 2007 in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.

All artists who are members of the Vicksburg Art Association (VAA) or are Mississippi residents 18 years or older are invited to participate in the Fall Art Show. This show is a great opportunity for artists at all levels to submit their work, test the waters, and see what other budding artists in Mississippi are doing. Cold Casting Workshop comng...

COLD CASTING JEWELRY

The Vicksburg Art Association will offer a hands-on cold casting jewelry class November 3rd and 4th from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Firehouse Gallery. Class will break for lunch and participates are encouraged to bring their own sack lunch and drinks. The instructor, Dell Clark, studied metalsmithing in England, Brighton Polytechnic and West Dean College. His jewelry designs tend to be non-complex and more to the earthy, primitive side of nature.

Various ways will be demonstrated and taught to trap, capture and present stones, beads, and other found objects. Participants will learn how to make necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other wearable art.

The classes are open to the public and no jewelry experience is required. Class fees are $65.00 for members of the Vicksburg Art Association and $70 for non-members. Julia Daily, Executive Director of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississipi will be our host. The program will cover crafts in America and Mississippi, the history of the Craftsmen's Guild and the Guild's new home, the Mississippi Craft Center. The newly opened 20,000 square foot Mississippi Craft Center represents over 400 artisans from 19 states and displays work that has elevated craft to fine art.

The non-profit organization of craftsmen preserves and promotes folk, traditional and contemporary crafts of Mississippi and encourages the highest standart of excellence in these crafts. The Guild has become a major southeastern influence and continues to implement its goals fhrough public service projects, continuing education in the arts, special events and festivals, and sales and marketing of member's work.

The first meeting of for the year of the Vicksburg Art Association will be held September 11, 2007 at 7:30 pm at the historic Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.

Dr. Randy Miley – Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Art at Mississippi College – will present a program updating us on the opening of the new Gore Gallery of Art and the impact of the Pajerski endowment for the college. He will introduce Suzy Nelson, the Director of the Gore Gallery of Art and she will speak about future plans and exhibitions.

Two years ago (just two weeks after Hurricane Katrina) as the opening program of the new year, Vicksburg Art Association presented a retrospective of the works of Elizabeth Pajerski – which had been donated by the family to Mississippi College to fund an endowment for School of Art. Much archival and curatorial work on the Pajerski materials (artworks, books, slides, journals, letters and cards, even her art supplies and leftover blank canvasses) has been performed and used by the students. As a special feature, a recipient of the Pajerski endowment will be on hand to speak about their studies.

Plans are to have more of Elizabeth’s artwork for sale to members and the community. All proceeds of the sale of artwork benefits Mississippi College to fund the Pajerski endowment.

This meeting is also a Membership Drive for the Vicksburg Art Association and a membership table will be available to join or to renew your membership.

Vicksburg Art Association meets monthly and offers a Spring Membership Exhibition, a Fall Statewide Exhibition, periodic workshops, and a Youth Exhibition. The annual Christmas Party is a benefit for the maintenance of the Old Constitution Firehouse.

Who: The Show is open to all members of the Vicksburg Art Association who are 18
years or older. (Dues are $15 for 9/06 - 8/07).

Entry: $15 for up to 3 pieces.

Eligibility: All work must be original to the entering artist. Copies of other works, any
work made from commercial kits, molds, or designs will not be accepted.
All entries must have been completed within the past two years.
Works entered in a previous VAA competitive show are not eligible.
Two dimensional work may be no larger than 48” x 48”.
All work on paper must be framed and wired for hanging.
Pieces with sawtooth hangers or exposed glass edges will not be accepted.
All work on canvas must be framed, stripped or have finished edges and be wired for
hanging.
All 3-dimensional work must be stable and no larger than 36"x36"x72"(tall) & capable of
being moved by two people.

Awards: Three Best in Show awards: First $200, Second $75, and Third $50. Ribbons
may be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place and Honorable Mention in each category at the
judge's discretion. Three “People’s Choice” Awards will also be awarded based on voting
by reception attendees.

Sales: The Vicksburg Art Association will retain a 15% commission on all sales.
All precautions will be exercised in the handling of art submitted to the show. However,
the VAA assumes no responsibility for any work beyond that of normal good care and
will not be responsible for work that is not picked up during the scheduled times. Work
left beyond Sat. May 26 will be subject to a $1 per day fee. Any work left past June 15
will become property of the VAA.

No work may be removed from the show before 4:00 PM on Wednesday, May 23.

Special Category...Magnolia Madness
In addition to the maximum three entries for competition, artists may enter one magnolia piece in
any medium These will be exhibited together and will not be judged.

Opening attendees will vote to award a special People’s Choice award to their favorite magnolia.

Magnolia may be for sale or not.

An added $3 fee will be charged for entry in the “Magnolia Madness” category.

One of the photographs entered in the show will be given a $200 award in honor of the late David Leenknecht. The winning entry will be chosen by the judge.

The April program will feature the creative talents of Vicksburg and Port Gibson students at the junior high and high school levels. Students from Vicksburg and Warren Central Junior High and High Schools, St. Aloysius High School and Chamberlain-Hunt Academy have submitted their work for judging in the annual VAA Youth Art Show. All mediums of art are accepted for judging: pen and ink drawings, painting, ceramics, photography and mixed media The program on Tuesday April 10th will be the opening of the show, all work will be exhibited and many of the artists will be present to discuss their work.

March 9, 2007–May 28, 2007

WASHINGTON—On August 29, 2005, a monstrous storm came ashore leaving behind enormous destruction beyond belief. The National Museum of Women in the Arts pays tribute to this tragic event from March 9, 2007, to May 28, 2007, through Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember: Photographs by Melody Golding. The more than 50 photographs offer personal insights into life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. Through a rich collage of images and stories, the exhibition documents the tempest’s initial overwhelming devastation, followed by the determination of Mississippi’s inhabitants to endure and prevail.

Noted Vicksburg photographer Melody Golding came to the Gulf Coast as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, bringing supplies and a desire to help. Her unique sepia-toned photographs, as well as a video diary, of her year-long sojourn along the coast are stunning and powerful in their simplicity.

Soprano, Lucia Lynn, a native of Mississippi composed and performed Song for Katrina which accompanies the streaming video. This haunting and painfully beautiful song is testament to the loss of life and a way of life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Melody Golding’s eye witness account of Katrina’s wake and its impact upon coastal residents from Pearlington to Pascagoula, is accompanied by stories written by survivors of the storm. The writers are friends and members of the Mississippi State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and many are artists. In the early days of the catastrophe, despite desperate circumstances and with great generosity of spirit, these women recorded their experiences with a broad diversity of voices.

Although the physical and psychological ordeal of Katrina has not yet ended, this exhibition presents a new chapter in the history of Mississippi women, a unique account of reclamation, resolution, and recovery.

“I try to capture in my work a sense not only of timelessness, but of grace. To convey an observance of order out of the usual chaos of visual forms. God has given me this gift to share in what I see in this world as a patient and ardent observer, and also a participant in what I see - the camera being the conduit of expression in my photography, the palette knife in my painting.”

A solo exhibition of Melody’s work ‘Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember’ opens at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, March-May 2007. Fifty sepia toned silver gelatin prints and unique large imbue prints will be exhibited along with hours of black and white streaming video Melody has taken spanning from September 2005 to August 2006.

This comprehensive exhibition and unique photographic journal, with its stunning sepia photographs of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina forms the basis of the book entitled ‘Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember’ to be published by the University Press of Mississippi in May 2007. Included are essays by noted authors Ellen Gilchrist and Mary Anderson Pickard. This book will join Melody’s photographs of the storm’s aftermath with the stories and reflections of those who lived through it. A compelling component of this exhibit is the interspersed text of poignant phrases drawn from the book.

A solo exhibit of Melody’s work, “Stark Exposures: Images of Katrina”, opened at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art on June 1 and continued through August 16, 2006. This was the first exhibit about Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

As Melody documented the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, some of her photographs were featured in The Royal Photographic Society Awards Journal, London October 2005. She is a member of The Royal Photographic Society, London.

The Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson has included Melody Golding’s work in the permanent collection, and her photography is in numerous other collections and historical museums. Melody’s work was chosen for inclusion in the Texas Photographic Society 21st Annual Members Only Show which exhibited in San Francisco, California and Houston Texas in the spring of 2006. She has shown at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. on several occasions at the Annual Spring Gala.

Melody has documented complex architectural wonders and the natural environment, as well as preserving moments in the incredible lives of others on four continents.

Sharing her vision is her goal. Melody lives in Vicksburg with her husband, and sons.

NMWA at 20

The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), founded in 1981 and opened in April 1987, is the only museum dedicated solely to celebrating the achievements of women in the visual, performing, and literary arts. The museum contains works by more than 900 artists in its permanent collection, maintains a Library and Research Center, and conducts multidisciplinary programs for diverse audiences. In the past 20 years since its’ opening the museum has presented more than 200 exhibitions, expanded its permanent collection to include over 3,600 pieces, and has a membership ranking it in the top ten museums nationally with more than 30,000 members. The March 2007 meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at 7:30 pm in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.

A big success in the past, the Yard Art program is returning March 13th at 7:30pm with Dr. Dirt (aka Leon Goldsberry) and Felder Rushing, known in the South for their unique, off-beat approach to horticulture and bringing art to the yard. The pair has been providing gardening advice on Mississippi Public Broadcasting every Tuesday for the last couple of years and is referred to as the Gestaldt gardeners. Dr. Dirt lives in Edwards in a house built by his ancestors in 1895 and a garden that contains plants that may be over 90 years old. His garden is designed as a series of rooms, each stuffed with perennials, flowering shrubs, potted plants and rooting beds and found art that complements the riotous flowering scenes. Felder Rushing, a Masters graduate of Mississippi State University and former state consumer horticulturist with the Extension Service has published over 15 gardening books and lectures across the country at renowned garden meetings and shows. The two promise to entertain us with their down-home style, zany humor and anecdotes, provide some gardening advice and challenge us to take a new look at found art for our gardens.

The Vicksburg Art Association presents an Art Swap and Critique by Ron Alexander on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse - corner of Main and Openwood - in downtown Vicksburg.

Do you have some good old art you don’t want to keep anymore, but don’t know what to do with? Do you want a new piece of art to brighten your walls and give you pleasure? The Art Swap and Critique will be held on Tuesday, February 13th to share your art, hear Ron Alexander’s critique and enjoy some potluck delights. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The Art Swap will be limited to the first 25 participants who deliver their piece to the Firehouse at 7 pm prior to the meeting on February 13th. All participants are encouraged to bring a potluck appetizer to share until the meeting begins at 730 pm. Ron Alexander will provide a critique of each piece of art as it is selected and unwrapped. Active in community projects throughout the area, Mr. Alexander has been both a judge and a participant. He was Head of the Department of Art at University of Louisiana at Monroe from 1983 – 2002 and has worked in all forms of art including graphic design, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and ceramics. Mr. Alexander encourages all forms of artistic expression as a vehicle for gaining insight and viewing the world in a better light.

Guidelines for the artwork that may be submitted are:

1) An original piece of art and can include work other than your own.

2) All media is accepted – painting, drawing, fiber, clay, 3D, Mixed Media, etc.

3) If the piece is a painting or drawing, it must be framed.

4) All pieces must be concealed with wrapping.

5) Minimum value for works submitted for exchange must be at least $30 and up to $50..

6) Limited to one item per participant.

As participants arrive for the Art Swap, they will be asked to draw a number at random. Once the swap begins, numbers will be called in numerical order. Each piece of art is considered ‘dead’ (participant keeps the chosen piece) after the second ‘swipe’ by another participant.

Since the Art Swap is being held during Mardi Gras month, all are encouraged to wear beads or colors of Mardi Gras to add to the fun.

The Southern Graphic Council Traveling Print Exhibit is a real plus for area residents. The 34 pieces by 25 artists are varied in their style, techniques, and content, but all are worth a few minutes study. We have artist statements on several of the pieces and a nice show catalog to accompany the viewing.

The show will be open only a few more days, Wednesday the 17^th from 4-6 pm, and Saturday and Sunday the 20^th and 21^st from 1-5 pm.

The photo shows Ed O’Neil presenting a program of discussion at the Association meeting, and a few of the prints can be seen.

The January 2007 meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association is scheduled for Tuesday, January 9th, 2007, at 7:30 pm in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.

This meeting will focus on prints in the juried traveling print exhibition of the Southern Graphics Council which the VAA is hosting for the January meeting. Mr. Ed O’Neil, a printmaker by avocation, will host the program. He will conduct a walking tour of the 34 prints in the exhibition describing the various printmaking techniques, media and styles used by the artists in the exhibition as well as discuss the artistic content of several prints displayed. Mr. O’Neil has been an active member of the Southern Graphics Council for over twenty years. It is the largest regional printmaking council in North America. The Southern Graphics Council is responsible for advancing the professional standing of artists who make original prints, drawings, books, and hand-made paper. These works will be on display from 6:30 pm through the end of the program January 9th and the Firehouse Gallery will be open for viewing the show during the following times:

Saturday January 20th and Sunday January 21st, 1 – 5pm
Wednesday January 10th, 4 - 6pm
Wednesday, January 17th , 4 - 6pm

Christmas Party Plans Announced

Vicksburg Art Association announces the Annual Christmas Party and Silent Auction, a benefit for the maintenance and upkeep of the historic Old Constitution Firehouse.

The event is planned for Friday, December 1, 2006, at 8 pm at the old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Openwood and Main Streets in Downtown Vicksburg.

Hosts for this year’s party are Mickey and Jaynie Fedell with the theme of A Pirate’s Christmas. The Firehouse will be transformed for the event and guests are invited to wear pirate-type attire.

A popular feature is the Silent Auction of art or services. The Auction is conducted from 8 pm to 10:30 pm. All purchases must be paid for at the close of the auction.

The event includes an open bar with heavy hors’doeurves.

Title sponsors are Rainbow Casino and Mad Genius, Inc.

Reservations for the Annual Christmas Party are $20 per person in advance, or $25 per person at the door. Advance registrations are due by November 29th.

The Vicksburg Art Association asks for donations for the Silent Auction, a popular feature of the Annual Christmas Party. This year the party is planned for Friday, December 1, 2006, at 8 pm.

The Party is a benefit to raise funds for the upkeep of the Old Constitution Firehouse at the corner of Openwood and Main Streets in historic Downtown Vicksburg, home to the Association.

Members and the public are asked to donate art or services for auction. Donations can be creative – services such as spa, catering, dinner parties, and food items have been auctioned in the past as well as artwork.

Contributions will be received at the Old Constitution Firehouse between the hours of 6:30 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, November 28 and Wednesday, November 29.

The November meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association is scheduled for

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006, at 7:30 pm

in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.

The Vicksburg Art Association will feature a unique program, Art with the Family on November 14th. Hands-on art projects that all members of a family, from grandparents to small children, can participate in and enjoy, will be presented. Local art teachers from the Vicksburg Warren school district, Nancy Mitchell (Warren Central High School), Joyce Brown (Vicksburg High School), Kathy Gibson (Vicksburg High School) and Lisa Grant (Vicksburg Intermediate School) will explore the use of different mediums and dimensions to involve each age group. As recent studies have shown, families, children especially, must pull away from television, computer and video games to remain physically healthy and mentally challenged. Through art and group projects, the family can find a vehicle for fostering creativity, expression, thought, communication, laughter, and bonds.

The October meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10th, 2006, at 7:30 PM in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg.

The second meeting of the 2006-07 membership year features The Art of Quiltmaking. This program will focus on the history of quiltmaking and the significance of the art as a social venue in small towns across the nation, most of all Mississippi. An art where individuals create their own vision, join together to develop a group vision and provide a close-knit forum for exchanging ideas and feelings, quiltmaking has been integral to rural life throughout generations.

The program will consist of award winning artists from Vicksburg and Port Gibson who will exhibit their art and share their experiences.

Patricia Crosby and Geraldine Page who created Mississippi Multicultural Crossroads, an organization dedicated to encouraging and preserving the arts and culture of Claiborne County, will present a sample of their quilts and strips and describe the role quilting plays in their lives. Both artists have won awards for their quilts across the state and region and have presented at the American Folklife Festival at the Smithsonian.

They will be joined by Barbara Cashman and Martha Skelton from Vicksburg Quilters who will provide the Vicksburg perspective. Cashman has taught quilting for over seven years for the Mississippi Quilters Association. Skelton, a mentor for Cashman, has also taught quilting and has her works displayed in several permanent collections and books on quilting.

Workshop Plans Announced

The Vicksburg Art Association presents a Mono-Print workshop on Saturday and Sunday, October 14 and 15, 2006, in the historic Old Constitution Firehouse - corner of Main and Openwood - in downtown Vicksburg.

Patt Odom, an award-winning painter from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, is the instructor. The workshop is titled ‘Creating Mono-prints Using Yupo Paper’. Registration fee for the two-day workshop is $80.00. Hours are from 9 am to 5 pm each day.

Odom has an extensive resume in workshop instruction and teaching as well as judging. Her own work may be seen currently at the Attic Gallery.

Odom’s education includes the Arrowmont School of Art and Craft, Ringling School of Art and Design, Louisiana Tech University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Hawaii, and the University of Southern Mississippi. She is represented by the following galleries:

This workshop will demonstrate the use of yupo paper and acrylic glazing liquid to create acrylic mono-prints without the need of a press. Participants should be able to make three prints from each inking plus the original yupo plate which may then be treated with mixed media—craypas, papers, stamps, etc.—limited only by one’s imagination. Participants can expect to get three prints from each plate and perhaps produce some creative serial pieces. The workshop should produce six to eight works.

A list of supplies is provided at registration. Participants can bring their own supplies, or supplies can be furnished for an additional fee.

The Vicksburg Art Association is hosting its Twenty-sixth Annual Mississippi Exhibition October 28-November 1, 2006.

All artists at least 18 years old who are VAA members or residents of Mississippi are invited to
participate.

Competitive Awards

Best-in-Show will be awarded $500. Ribbons will be awarded to 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and Honorable Mentions in each category according to the discretion of the judge.

Purchase Awards:

Purchase awards are being pledged by individuals, businesses and organizations in the community.

Rules of Entry

1. Entry fees are $15.00 for current members. Those who want to join or renew their membership may pay the $15.00 entry fee if they also pay the $15.00 membership fee.

2. Each artist may enter a total of three (3) pieces in the following categories:

Oil • Watercolor • Print • Three-Dimensional • Photograph-Monochrome
Acrylic • Drawing • Fiber • Mixed-Media • Photograph-Color

3. Flat work must not exceed 48 inches by 48 inches, including the frame, and 75 pounds. All work must be framed, with no exposed glass or raw edges, and ready for hanging (with picture wire only - no sawtooth hangers.) An entry label should be attached to the back of each piece in the lower right corner.

4. Three-dimensional work must not exceed 48 inches by 48 inches and 100 pounds. An entry label should be attached to each piece in an appropriate spot.

5. All work must be original to the entering artist, not more than 2 years old, and not have been shown in a previous VAA competitive show. Copies of other works will not be accepted, nor will anything made from commercial kits, molds, or designs.

6. A l l w o r k m u s t b e f o r s a l e . A 15% commission will be retained by the VAA on all sales, including the Purchase Awards. Payment will be made to the VAA, which will issue payment to the artist.

7. All work must be hand delivered to the Constitution Firehouse Gallery, Main and Openwood Streets, according to the schedule. No work will be released prior to the official closing of the show.

8. All precautions will be exercised in the handling of art submitted to the show. However, the VAA assumes no responsibility for any work beyond that of normal good care and will not be responsible for work that is not picked up during the scheduled times. Work left beyond final pickup day will be subject to a $1 per day fee.

9. The VAA reserves the right to photograph work for publicity purposes, to refuse any entry and to reassign categories.

Melody Golding has documented complex architectural wonders and the natural environment, as well as preserving moments in the incredible lives of others on four continents. Most recently, she documented the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, some of which photographs are featured in The Royal Photographic Society Awards Journal, London October 2005. Melody’s work has shown and is owned both nationally and internationally.

An exhibit of Melody’s work, “Stark Exposures: Images of Katrina”, opened at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art on June 1 and was held over through August 13. This unique photographic journal, with its stunning sepia photographs of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and its effects on all sectors of society on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, forms the basis of a book soon to be published by the University Press of Mississippi. The book will join Melody’s photographs of the storm’s aftermath with the stories and reflections of those who lived through it. A compelling component of this well-received exhibit is the interspersed text of poignant phrases drawn from the book.

*Melody has donated all of her work for this project. 100% of the proceeds generated for this project and the Mississippi State Committee will go to the Artist Relief Fund set up to help artists get back on their feet. This Fund has already been implemented and has helped many artists on the coast who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.

* All Melody's film and negatives have been "promised" to The Mississippi Department of Archives and History. She has taken thousands and thousands of images, and hours of film documentation which they will store for future generations.

* The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. is planning an exhibit of Melody's work in the Spring of 2007.

Nationally-known Mississippi Artist, H.C. Porter, is currently working on an extensive documentary project called “BACKYARDS AND BEYOND: Mississippians and Their Stories”. A social realist, she has focused her life’s work for the past 15 years on documenting Mississippians through her distinctive mixed media “environmental portrait” paintings.

Now, in response to Hurricane Katrina, she is spending much of her time on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Encouraged by her collectors nationwide and a personal desire to use her life’s work to narrate the historical rebuilding, her focus has shifted to documenting the amazing strength, resiliency, and hope of Mississippians as they rebuild their lives after this incalculable disaster. Although her work has previously focused on Mississippi’s black communities, this project includes images of all Mississippians, both Black and White, Vietnamese and Hispanic.

The mission of this project is to create a powerful Exhibition of 80 privately owned paintings, which will, in turn, form a special Exhibition that will travel to Museums, Galleries, & Universities throughout the South and the Nation for years to come. This Exhibition will be a long-term reminder of how the people of our state have experienced and endured this country’s greatest natural disaster. (A portion of the proceeds from various components of the Exhibition (book & print sales, exhibition fees, etc) will be earmarked for a special fund set up to help rebuild lives and communities in Mississippi.)

H.C. Porter’s powerful images of the Human Spirit, paired with audio recordings of those represented in the paintings, will keep the awareness and needs of our state alive for as many years as this Exhibit is presented. The opportunity to show the rest of this country and the world who we are as Mississippians is monumental. The unity, diversity, resiliency, and love for this state recorded throughout her documentary, both visually and audibly, is certain to transform the often held, outdated stereotype of this great state forever.

Displaced New Orleanian trumpeter Charlie Mille r brings the sound of his horn to the Firehouse to soothe the soul of the listeners. This will be a treat for all.

Bio for Charlie Miller, Trumpeter By Jean Blue

Charlie Miller, famed trumpet player, fled his native New Orleans with the threat of Katrina. He went to McGehee, Arkansas and from there finally made his way to Vicksburg where he now resides.

Charlie began his path toward playing trumpet by blowing into his mother’s garden hose. He also plays keyboard and flute and he sings. He has produced 2 CDs – ‘Peace Horn’ and ‘Fonk Horn.’

Following a tour of duty in the Navy, he spent 28 years performing gigs in New York with Lou Rawls, Peggy Lee, BB King, Tony Bennett and Gladys Knight & the Pips. He played Carnegie Hall with blues legend Thelonius Monk. He has been the leader of Dr. John’s band, a member of the Saturday Night Live band and performed on Broadway in Annie and South Pacific.

Charlie was a recent guest of the Minister of Culture as an artist-in-residence for the French government. While in France, he participated in a jazz festival, taught master classes, and performed concerts at the Abbey where he resided in Normandy.

Since he has been in Vicksburg, Charlie has presented concerts at local churches and has played gigs in Clinton and Jackson.

When the rains started in Mississippi, Visser, a fifth-grade teacher in the town of Long Beach, was in bumper-to-bumper traffic trying to evacuate. After returning to the shattered town, she decided to have her children draw pictures to help them deal with the experience. Other children joined in the process, and eventually the project involved 30 children, ranging in age from 5 to 13. The result, a combination of staccato text and simple yet heart-wrenching collage art, brings the devastation to a level kids can understand. The book begins with stark statements: "Katrina's winds were terrible, and blew things to pieces." Later, the text becomes more thoughtful: "Our new home was not the same, but it was a home." The accompanying picture shows a trailer, but there are hamburgers cooking outside on a grill. The children all added pieces to the various collages, but there's a strong cohesive look to the appealing art. This will be of great value to children who lived through Katrina as well as those who have had questions after watching the horrific storm on TV. Ilene Cooper

The Pass Christian Art Association is having an exhibit at the Municipal Art Gallery on North State St. during the month of August. The opening reception is this Sunday afternoon. Most of these folks lost everything in, and/or have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina . They need a place to display and sell their art, and especially, need a reason to create their art, and this exhibit was put together for that purpose.

Where: Constitution Firehouse Gallery, 1204 Main (at Openwood Street).

Who: The Show is open to all members of the Vicksburg Art Association who are 18
years or older. (Dues are $15 for 9/05 - 8/06).

Entry: $15 for up to 3 pieces.

March Meeting Announced

Art in Every Day Life is the theme for a panel discussion at the Vicksburg Art Association's monthly meeting Tuesday (March 14, 2006) at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Constitution Firehouse, Openwood and Main Streets.

Panel participants will be Jean O'Neil, fashion consultant; Regina Gailani,owner of Art & Soul; and Jeff Richardson, landscape architect for City ofVicksburg. They will be discussing art for the body, home and surroundings and encouraging audience participation to define: Art in Every Day Life. Is it an approach to any aspect of life? A flair with thought and a touch of design without necessarily costing more than the mundane items often found surrounding us? What do you think?

Members and the interested public are invited to bring their questions for the panelists and to bring some of their own examples of Art in Every DayLife: quilting, jewelry, bonsai, kitchenware, woodcraft, etc. - objects which reflect handmade craftsmanship and a strong sense of design.

Participants of 2005-2006 VAA Workshops will show their work created during the workshops.

Annual Christmas Party and Silent Auction - Details

The event is planned for Friday, December 2, 2005, at 8 pm at the old
Constitution Firehouse on the corner of Openwood and Main Streets in
Downtown Vicksburg.

The party is hosted by Dr. & Mrs. Shawn Panzer and is a benefit for the
upkeep of the Constitution Firehouse - the home of the association.

The theme for this year is a Wild West Christmas. The Firehouse will be
appropriately decorated and guests are invited to share in the fun. A
popular feature is the silent auction of art or services. The silent
auction will be held from 8 pm to 10:30 pm. All purchases must be paid for
at the close of the auction. The proceeds of the auction and party directly
benefit the Constitution Firehouse.

The event includes an open bar with heavy hors'doeurves. Title sponsors are
Ameristar Casino and GI Associates.

Reservations for the Annual Christmas Party are $20 per person in advance,
or $25 per person at the door. Advance registrations are due by November

Silver wins Best in Show

Mary Hardy, head of the Art Department of Mississippi Gulf Coast College, judged the Vicksburg Art Association's 25th Annual Mississippi Artists Exhibition, and chose Lesley Silver's Mixed Media painting/collage entitled: Stories Without Morals as Best in Show from among the 138 entires in the show. Ms. Silver received a cash award of $500.

Awards were given in nine categories:

Watercolor, Photo Mono, Photo Color, Drawing, Mixed Media, 3 Dimensional, Oil, Acrylic, and Print.

November Program Announced - Icons

On Tuesday, November 8 at 7:30 PM the Very Reverend John Morris of St. George Orthodox Christian Church will present a program called - Icons-Art for the Spirit. The talk will be complemented by an exhibition of art by area artists who paint icons.

November Workshop Details Released

Adult Drawing Workshop,

November 5, 10 am - 3 pm, and November 6, 1:30 - 3:30 pm.

The teacher is Lisa Grant. Beginning with the basic concepts of pencil drawing, workshop participants will experiment with and practice various styles of drawing, shading, and other techniques. From there, they will move into charcoal, colored pencil, and pen and ink with watercolor washes.

Ms. Grant will furnish all materials.

Since 1981, Ms. Grant has taught art in local schools, the Vicksburg Senior Citizen Center and the Southern Culture Heritage Center. She currently teaches at Vicksburg Intermediate School. Ms. Grant received a Bachelor of Science degree in Art and a Master of Education degree from Mississippi College.

Vicksburg Stained Glass Artists present program

Drew Miller (right) and Linda Jackson discuss ³Art in Glass,² the program they will present at the Vicksburg Art Association¹s October meeting. Miller and Kathryn Lord operate Amberstar Glass, where they design, construct, and restore stained glass windows and lamps inpired by Tiffany, Frank Lloyd Wright, and others. Jackson is owner of ³Suncatchers² where she sells stained art-lass supplies and teaches the craft. She works on projects with art glass, including beads and hot glass. She also creates glass mosaics and stained glass objects of all sizes.

The VAA meeting is at the Firehouse on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m., with the general public invited to learn all about stained glass.

PAJERSKI ART SHOW & SALE SPONSORED BY VAA & MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Vicksburg Art Association will hold its 2005-06 kickoff meeting on
Tuesday, September 13th, 2005, at 7:30 pm in the historic Old Constitution
Firehouse on the corner of Main and Openwood in Downtown Vicksburg. A
reception will follow. The meeting is open to the general public. Dr. Lee
Royce, president of Mississippi College will be a featured speaker.

The Mississippi College Department of Art is partnering with the Vicksburg
Art Association to present the Pajerski Retrospective Show and Sale. All
proceeds from the sale will be used to endow a scholarship fund to benefit
Mississippi College students majoring in Art.

The Vicksburg Art Association is honored to bring home to Vicksburg hundreds
of Pajerski’s works in watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastels, drawings, and
prints. The collection spans over 40 years of the career of this prolific
artist. It is the first time since her death that collectors and the public
have had an opportunity to purchase her work.

Pajerski, originally from Meridian, MS, was a resident of Vicksburg for most
of her life. Her work is found in permanent collections and in the homes of
many avid collectors. Pajerski participated in many Mississippi art
groups—such as the Meridian Museum of Art, Allison’s Wells, the Museum of
Art for Women, Utica Arts Colony, Henry Jacobs Camp, the Walter Anderson
Museum of Art, and the Mississippi Arts Colony.

Additional hours for viewing and purchasing art will be:

The Vicksburg Art Association meets monthly and offers a Spring Membership

Mayor Proclaims Jean Blue Weekend

At the opening of the Jean Blue Retrospective show Thursday, May 5, hundreds of attendees witnessed Mayor Laurence Leyens read a proclamation describing Jean's community involvement and serivce as well as her artistic gifts and ending by declaring the coming weekend as "Jean Blue Weekend."

Jean Blue Honored with Retrospective

The paintings of Vicksburg Art Association artist and longtime member, Jean Blue will be featured in a retrospective show which opens at the Firehouse on Thursday, May 5 from 8 PM until 10 PM. This show is the culmination of a year dedicated to honoring Ms. Blue.

In addition to the planned honors, Jean won Best in Show in both the VAA Fall and Spring competitions this year truly marking the 2004 - 2005 Art Association year as hers.

Over 75 pieces are being borrowed from local collectors for the exhibit. These will be augmented with a few brand new pieces which Jean has created especially for the show. These will be for sale.

Entry: $10 for up to five pieces, with a maximum of 3 pieces in any one category.

Eligibility: All work must be original to the entering artist. Copies of other works, any work made from commercial kits, molds, or designs will not be accepted.

All entries must have been completed within the past two years.

Works entered in a previous VAA competitive show are not eligible.

All work on paper must be framed and wired for hanging.

Pieces with sawtooth hangers or exposed glass edges will not be accepted.

All work on canvas must be framed, stripped or have finished edges and be wired for hanging.

All 3-dimensional work must be stable and capable of being moved by two people.

Awards: Three Best in Show awards: First $200, Second $75, and Third $50. Ribbons may be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place and Honorable Mention in each category at the judge's discretion. Three “People’s Choice” Awards will also be awarded based on voting by reception attendees.

Sales: The Vicksburg Art Association will retain a 15% commission on all sales.

Special Category... The VAA is honoring our own Jean Blue with a retrospective show and tribute next month. As an appetizer, we are adding a one time only category: Something Blue.

Mississippi Museum of Art Comes to Vicksburg (at the SCHF)

The Mississippi Museum of Art has selected the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s Cobb House as an affiliate site, which means that throughout the year we will be able to see exhibits from the Museum’s permanent collection right in our back yard!

SCHF cordially invites you to attend a cocktail reception announcing the new affiliate relationship, Thursday, January 27 in the SCHF Auditorium (corner of Crawford and Cherry Streets).

Select artwork from the Mississippi Museum of Art’s permanent collection will be exhibited featuring Vicksburg’s own Caroline Compton, along with works by her Mississippi contemporaries including Eudora Welty, William Hollingsworth, Marie Hull, and Walter Anderson.

Vicksburg's 3 of Arts: A 3-Day Weekend of Gallery Openings & Studio Tours.

A group of Vicksburg artists and gallery owners (most of whom are VAA members) are conspiring to make Warren County a mecca for the visual arts (at least for a 3 day weekend). Special shows will hang in the galleries and artists will open their home studios to the public. In all there are eleven sites to visit over the three days.

As an incentive to attend all the events, 3 of arts playing cards will be handed out at each location. Only those with a "full deck" will be eligible for the big prize.

November Meeting Details...

The November meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association will be Tuesday, November 9 at 7:30 PM at the Old Constitution Firehouse. The public is invited.

Members of the Rio Trio will discuss their techniques of design visulization.

Local artists and designers, Randy Kleinman, David Longmire and Miguel Valenciano combined their talents to form Rio Trio and create the three-dimensional computer rendering of what Vicksburg's new downtown park would look like. The techniques used are the same as those used in making major movies.

Best in Show:

Juror Deanna Douglas chose Jean Blue's Acrylic painting entitled Daily Bread as the Best in Show at the opening of the VAA's 24th Annual Mississippi Artists Exhibition Saturday, October 23. Jean received a check for $500.

The Vicksburg Art Association's Twenty-fourth Annual Mississippi Exhibition will open Saturday October 23 at 8 PM at the Firehouse Gallery. The public is invited.

Competitive Awards
Best-in-Show will be awarded $500. Ribbons will be awarded to 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and Honorable Mentions in each category according to the discretion of the judge.

The judge for this year's show is Deanna Douglas of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Deanna was born in Illinois but raised on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. She received a B.F.A. in commercial art from the University of Southern Mississippi and an M.F.A. in design from the University of Mississippi.

She taught for eighteen years at Mississippi State University where she was Professor of Art and also in Oregon and Georgia. While at Mississippi State she was selected as the outstanding undergraduate teacher in 1990 and served as the 1985 graduation commencement marshall which is also based on outstanding undergraduate teaching.

Douglas is presently Associate Professor of Art at the University of Southern Mississippi where she teaches graphic design.

Her work has been in over 79 national juried exhibitions since 1973 with work being shown at such museums and galleries as the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris, the Tampa Museum of Art, Parkersburg Art Center in West Virginia, The El Paso Museum of Art, the Arkansas Art Center, the Montgomery Art Center in West Palm Beach and the Lancaster Museum in Lancaster, California.

About her own work Deanna said, "my work is a mixture of techniques used in graphic design and fine arts. I've never seen a conflict in these two areas, but rather a blending that offers each a wider range of possibilities. With this background it follows that I would work in a variety of media."

Banners Fill the Firehouse for October Meeting...

At 7:30 PM Tuesday, October 12 at the Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery, The Vicksburg Art Association will present a program and exhibition at its October meeting called "Vicksburg's Banners: In From the Cold."

The program will focus on the colorful banners which line some streets of Vicksburg and the local creators of the original art from which they were produced. An exhibit of their work will fill the gallery, along with the actual banners. Barry Graham, former president of the Art Association and coordinator of the banner project for the Mayor's office, will explain the project.

Participating artists, many of whom are Vaa members, will be in attendance to allow the public to meet them and see the faces behind the banners. Van Gogh and Mondrian to visit Southeast

How is that? If you are a Patron (that is, if you agree to purchase at least one work from the show) you are invited to a special cocktail hour prior to the Opening Reception to view the works and make your selection.

The Vicksburg Art Association appreciates those Patrons who support both the artists and our shows each year by purchasing works of art for their private collections.

2004 - 2005 Workshop Details Released

Brenda Neumann has announced several workshops for the coming year.

USING THE COMPUTER AS AN ART TOOL - NOVEMBER, 13 2004

Gayle McCarty, head of the Art Department at HInds Community College at Raymond, will conduct this workshop. She will do a demonstration using Adobe Photoshop and also Freehand by Macromedia using Apple Computers. The class will bring photographs or drawings to manipulate using the computers.

The class will take place on Saturday, November 13, 2004 from 10 AM until 3 PM. We need a minimum of 8 participants and a maximum of 12. The fee will be $40 for members and $5 for nonmembers

BEGINNING CLAY WORKSHOP - JANUARY & FEBRUARY, 2005

The VAA's Janet Akers of Cherry Street Studio and the Mississippi Craftsman's Guild will serve as teacher. This workshop will be conducted on 4 Thursday nights: January 20th &amp;amp; 27 and February 3rd & 10th, 2005. Each session will run from 7 PM until 9:30 PM. Several different forms of handbuilding will be presented including pinch pots, coils, and slabs. Cost will be $60 for members and $65 for nonmembers. An additional fee of $10 to $15 will be charged for supplies (clay, glazes, firing, etc.). Limited to 12 participants.

MIXED MEDIA (LARGE) - MARCH 5th & 6th, 2005

Ron Alexander, retired professor of art at LSU Monroe, will lead this interesting use of many mediums to create art from inexpensive leftover items. Large cardboard boxes will be cut to provide a base. Collaging found items and using varied materials such as acrylics, Elmer's Glue, watercolors, oil base paint, alcohol, and polyurethane will be explored. Cardboard, denim, canvas, matboard, watercolor paper, print papers may be used. This workshop will spark the participants imagination to use most anything found in low relief or something made into an image not normally considered for a form. Participants will learn how to seal the finished pieces with polymer medium to make them permanent and inexpensive frame making techniques for the project will be included.

Mr. Alexander will be presenting a program on this method at our January meeting. This workshop will take place on March 5th & 6th, 2005. Seven to eleven participants will be required for the workshop to meet. Cost will be $65 for members and $70 for nonmembers.

VAA Member in Jackson Show

Vicksburg's Wanda Hurt Warren has two pieces hanging in a juried show sponsored by the Mississippi Catholic Diocese entitled "Fresh Inspiration: One Challenge of Peace."

The exhibit will hang through October 10 at the Eudora Welty Library on Capitol Street in downtown Jackson.

The show opens with a reception on Sunday, September 12 from 2 PM until 4 PM.

They will be showing their work and sharing with us the story of the project which was sponsored by the Mississippi Museum of Art and the City of Vicksburg.

Vicksburg Native Patrick Kelly Retrospective at Brooklyn Museum of Art

According to a story from the Monday, May 31 issue of the Washington Post, Vicksburg born fashion designer, Patrick Kelly is being honored with a retrospective show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

From the article by Robin Givhan: Kelly (made) history, becoming the first American admitted to the Chambre Syndicale, France's prestigious organization of fashion designers.

"While he loved Madame Gres and Yves Saint Laurent, he'd say that in one pew at Sunday church in Vicksburg, there's more fashion to be seen than on a Paris runway," his partner, Bjorn Amelan, recalls.

In addition to his designs, items from Kelly's extensive collection of African-American memorabilia are featured in the show which runs through Septemeber 5, 2004.

Mayor Laurence Leyens contacted the VAA recently to announce that the City of Vicksburg has acquired the vacant lot next to the firehouse with the plan of grading it down to street level and creating a landscaped parking lot for use by the VAA. This will improve the appearance and cure some drainage problems which have plagued the firehouse over the years.

No target date has been announced for completion of this project.

Spring Show Details

The Vicksburg Art Association offers its Spring Exhibition of statewide art on Saturday, April 3 at the historic old Constitution Firehouse. The show will run thru Wednesday, April 7, 2004.

Artists are encouraged to submit their work at the Constitution Firehouse at the following times:

Saturday, March 27th from 2 to 4 pm

Monday, March 29th from 4 to 6 pm

Categories include Oil, Acrylic, Fiber, Photo-Mono, 3 Dimensional, Drawing, Print, Photo-Color, Watercolor, and Mixed Media.

There are Three Best in Show Awards – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. Ribbons will be awarded in all categories at the judge’s discretion. A special feature of the Spring Exhibition is the People’s Choice award which will be determined by members and the general public who are in attendance at the Opening Reception.

The February meeting

of the Vicksburg Art Association is planned for Tuesday, February 10th, at 7:30 pm at the old Constitution Firehouse at the junction of Openwood and Main Streets in Downtown Vicksburg. Speaker for the meeting is local artist, Janet Akers.

Akers will present a slide show on architectural ceramics -- the art of using clay to produce unique door frames, fireplace surrounds, and other structural elements in homes and commercial buildings. She will also discuss a workshop she attended with world renowned sculptor and potter, Peter King, at his studio - StoneHaus Architectural Ceramics in Pensacola, Florida.

Akers has been working with clay for the past 13 years. She creates sculptural pieces that appeal to the viewers' sense of touch, hearing, and sight. Most of her work is not glazed, but is fired with vegetation or wood shavings to produce a more natural looking surface.

Ms. Akers received her training from classes and workshops at Hinds Community College, Raymond; Northeast Louisiana University, Monroe; and art centers throughout the country.

She is an active member and board member of both the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi and the Vicksburg Art Association. She has conducted workshops and demonstrations for these two organizations and local Girl Scout troops. Her work has won awards in numerous art shows in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
